Agenga and his Friend
Narrated by Kwot Awak
Agenga and his friend went to the bush to collect some honey. When they got there, his friend couldn’t collect any honey, so Agenga left him under the tree and he climbed the tree and collected the honey himself out of the beehive. It is common is parts of Ethiopia for beehives to be put in trees. After he had finished collecting the honey he started to eat it.
His friend said, “Why don’t you throw me some pieces of honey? If you don’t want to throw it, come down and let us eat it together.”
He answered, “At the beginning you said you didn’t know how to collect the honey. If you want any, climb up the tree and eat it up here.”
The friend said, “At the beginning you said you would throw me some. If you don’t, I will try and pay you back.”
So he collected some firewood and began to make a fire under the tree.
As the smoke increased, Agenga started sneezing.
He said, “Please reduce the volume of the smoke, so that I can throw you some honey.”
“First throw me the honey. Then I will reduce the smoke,” his friend said.
So Agenga threw him some pieces, and the friend started eating, and he said, “OK, you come down here with the rest of the honey. We are friends so we should trust each other and help each other.”
